The Victoria HarbourCats’ baseball season was on the brink in the battle of provincial capitals. The HarbourCats trailed the Edmonton Riverhawks 1-0 in their best-of-three West Coast League North Division playoff semifinal series heading into Saturday night’s second game in Edmonton.

Riverhawks pitcher Reece Hemmerling recorded a complete-game 6-1 victory in the opening game of the series on Friday night at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park. University of Hawaii NCAA slugger Kamana Nahaku provided the HarbourCats with their lone highlight with a solo shot home run in the ninth inning.

The third game, if required, between the second-seed Riverhawks and third-seed HarbourCats, would be played today in Edmonton. The series winner will advance to the single-game North Division final to be played at the home of the highest remaining seed. The top-seed Bellingham Bells and fourth-seed Wenatchee Wild are playing in the other North Division semifinal series. — Times Colonist
