CANTON— A scratch-off ticket sold at the Stewarts Shops location on East Main Street will net a Canton resident over $6.4 million.
Daniel Durham claimed a top prize on the New York Lottery’s $10,000,000 Bonus scratch-off game, and opted to receive a one-time lump sum payment totaling $6,467,007, after required withholdings.
New York’s scratch-off games reportedly generated $4,339,794,048 in total sales during fiscal year 2024-2025. School districts in St. Lawrence County received $30,354,530 in Lottery Aid to Education funds during the same period.
Daniel Durham is listed as a level 3 sex offender on the New York State sex offender registry.
In 1994 he was convicted of four counts of sodomy and two counts of first-degree sexual abuse involving a 17 year old female victim. The crime was reported in 1992.
In December 2014 a registered sex offender won $3 million in a scratch off from 7-Eleven in Florida, according to several news reports.
The man was sued by his victims and settled the matter out of court. The story was covered by ABC News.
The incident raised debate about whether or not registered sex offenders should be allowed to purchase lottery tickets.
There are reports of some states proposing legislation to bar sex offenders from purchasing lottery tickets, but none appear to have passed.
