Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for much of Quebec following severe heat

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for a large area of the province, incuding Montreal, Quebec City, the Eastern Townships, the Lower St. Lawrence region northern Quebec.

This comes several days after Environment Canada issued a heat warning, which is still in effect. The agency says it will likely be last day of intense heat for the areas affected.

On Wednesday, Environment Canada said conditions are favourable for a potentially dangerous thunderstorm to develop Wednesday afternoon or early evening. It says the storm could produce strong winds, large hail and heavy rain.

There’s also a slight risk for a tornado to form. Power outages are possible.

Environment Canada says to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. If outdoors, protect yourself from hair and flying debris.

“When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” writes Environment Canada in the watch alert.
